I didn't start until the March birthday so will go until March 2017.<br />
When I got back to Texas from our 7 week 'vacation' in Idaho I sat down at my machine to sew the first post card and my machine IS NOT WORKING! I took it to the repair shop yesterday. Although I thought this through, I thought, my extra machines are ALL in Idaho. (I have about 4 that work well and a treadle that works, and 2 OLD ones that I haven't tried to sew on.)I also packed and moved ALL my interfacing, wonder under... I need that to do the postcards. Luckily a friend loaned me a machine and I went to Joann's and bought a yard of interfacing, enough for 30 postcards. One down 11 to go...I need to get them made up through July since I think it will take a long time to get my sewing area up and working. <br />

I've ironed some strips to the interfacing...waiting for some sewing time.Lauriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09493918796320739364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7762343635054811415.post-43139738165354695862016-01-24T12:15:00.001-08:002016-02-28T16:45:28.439-08:00moving...a struggle that continues....I have not fallen off the edge of the earth. Just in Idaho. Lots of snow! I have high altitude sickness and struggle to function. I did find and visit a quilt shop and a knit shop. I started and finished a hat this week. Have 3 more planned. The sons lost their hats. ..also husband. Young granddaughter hasn't received one yet. ..so now I'm not bored while I try to get used to the altitude. Didn't bring my computer on this trip so I won't do many posts.Lauriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09493918796320739364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7762343635054811415.post-15789928567544310012015-12-18T14:49:00.001-08:002015-12-19T18:32:05.565-08:00so busy..Here is a collection of postcards that my parents have received;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Fl8sX1ltwN8/VnSMR5UbVRI/AAAAAAAAKm0/TQhTIuUTHz0/s1600/IMAG1988%2B-%2BCopy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Fl8sX1ltwN8/VnSMR5UbVRI/AAAAAAAAKm0/TQhTIuUTHz0/s1600/IMAG1988%2B-%2BCopy.jpg" /></a></div>
I do not know why I did 2 m's, bad record keeping I guess. I love the B but it doesn't quite go with the others....Maybe I'll make another one. ..In the future. My life is just a bit chaotic right now. I need to say that the work of Kathleen Loomis inspired me to start these postcards, her and a whole bunch of narrow scraps of fabric. I'm not an artist but I enjoyed doing these letters.. Maybe the whole alphabet should be my next goal....<br />
<br />
Christmas is almost here and I have managed to put up/out 8 Christmas quilts and a wreath on the front door. But that was removed since we had the door repainted....I did an extra lot of decorating last year so this year the nothing decorated balances out...Doesn't seem to bother anyone but me.<br />
<br />

Maybe I'll get this blogging re-figured out. Meanwhile I was able to get a photo and reduce it so I can put it here.<br />

This was a fun, easy quilt my friend Lisa made. I quilted our favorite paisley design on it. It was beautiful. Lisa's quilts are always beautiful and well made. A winning combination.<br />
<br />
edit; <br />When I looked at this post the picture did not show up, however, when I clicked on it anyway I could see it...<br />

All crosshatching. Those squares? They are not quite square. A friend's grandmother pieced...some of the navy blocks, Lisa decided to finish the quilt and added the lighter blue blocks then re-sewed many of the navy ones. It turned out fabulous. Now I wonder what a green and white quilt done the same way would look, or how about 2 shades of pink?<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Initially the postcard on the left was to be oriented the long way, so I put the blue sky as it is......but I decided that cat worked better vertical. I had to go dig through my collar and cuff scraps to get the pumpkin. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Life has been crazy busy but I may still have blogged if I could get an easy resizer tool for windows 10...I got a new computer and am learning how to use it. Everything seems to be different....maybe it's an improvement but it just seems wrong now.</div>

Summer was just so busy this year. This is the latest.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wlXsiWSR1zE/Vf2jOI97yeI/AAAAAAAAKio/Awo8cqwqlaQ/s1600/20150917_010415-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wlXsiWSR1zE/Vf2jOI97yeI/AAAAAAAAKio/Awo8cqwqlaQ/s320/20150917_010415-1.jpg" width="218" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Will I ever run out of narrow little bits of shirt fabric? </div>
Lauriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09493918796320739364noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7762343635054811415.post-57425206007780071942015-09-14T13:50:00.000-07:002015-09-14T13:50:39.671-07:00Julie's quiltI really did stay busy this summer. Too busy sometimes. I was asked, very sweetly, to quilt a quilt for our only granddaughter. She had been given a vintage top, it only needed a simple panto....HA!<br />
Unfortunately it was stained so they washed it before sending it to me. Oh dear, parts shrank way more than other parts, and no, I didn't take a before picture. I decided to take it apart and resew it. After it was apart I decided it would be easier to replace the fabric. Luckily for me I couldn't get 2 shades of turquoise so I got to eliminate the 4-patches in the corner stones and simplify the quilt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sMwJthn2cJI/Vfcp-zac73I/AAAAAAAAKg0/S4O6_0BAltk/s1600/julie%2527s%2B6.BMP" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sMwJthn2cJI/Vfcp-zac73I/AAAAAAAAKg0/S4O6_0BAltk/s320/julie%2527s%2B6.BMP" width="263" /></a></div>
Here is my eq7 version of the original. The applique blocks are not very accurate, but they are tulips, there are 3 of them in each block, and they are bright colors.<br />
This is the computer version of what I changed it to:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4YF3MBPS3DI/Vfctx0gne4I/AAAAAAAAKhA/mV1QQhllvqs/s1600/Julie%2527s%2B6.BMP" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4YF3MBPS3DI/Vfctx0gne4I/AAAAAAAAKhA/mV1QQhllvqs/s320/Julie%2527s%2B6.BMP" width="272" /></a></div>
I think I improved it. Softened the colors somewhat and eliminated the 4-patch (I couldn't find 2 shades of turquoise.) Then I HAD to custom quilt it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JxyXQNSZ5T4/VfcwRe0Ld2I/AAAAAAAAKhM/o9yM_SsjmfA/s1600/20150731_131201%2B%2528450x800%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JxyXQNSZ5T4/VfcwRe0Ld2I/AAAAAAAAKhM/o9yM_SsjmfA/s320/20150731_131201%2B%2528450x800%2529.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
This still has the markings on it but I outlined the tulips then did a double square in the background and a simple meander. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QQlh3gA7bQA/Vfcw1HDtrgI/AAAAAAAAKhY/d2MgRCj3Q6I/s1600/20150810_095140%2B%2528800x450%2529%2B%2528800x450%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QQlh3gA7bQA/Vfcw1HDtrgI/AAAAAAAAKhY/d2MgRCj3Q6I/s320/20150810_095140%2B%2528800x450%2529%2B%2528800x450%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I used a large plate to trace a partial circle, then I used a cup and a can to trace different size circles in an arc in the border. I quilted an apple blossom in each small circle, the did a simple meander in the background. The bottom of the quilt got her name; Julie Grace.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rWOMl5ExPqg/VfcyIgknghI/AAAAAAAAKh4/7-uuN85ozkA/s1600/20150807_164207%2B%2528800x450%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rWOMl5ExPqg/VfcyIgknghI/AAAAAAAAKh4/7-uuN85ozkA/s320/20150807_164207%2B%2528800x450%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
My son designed the name on the computer in 5 inch high letters. I glued them to freezer paper and cut them out. After ironing them on the border I traced around each letter, then removed the freezer paper. Then I quilted around each letter twice, added some flowers and meandering and finished;<br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here you can see the backing fabric and one of the 2 pillowcases I made her.<br />
I LOVED the way it turned out!<br />

Nativity to be...My sister decided to make 4 of her children Nativity scenes for Christmas this year. She has been working all year on this project. In May I helped her a bit (if you call ripping out what she had done and telling her to do it over help) and then in June she gave me the 4 grounds and the 4 skies. I put them together and quilted them for her. Now she will paint figures onto pellon and velcro them to the backgrounds. I may or may not see the finished product for years. But here are the backgrounds:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dLGtQ2eA98c/VfMx5djA0fI/AAAAAAAAKf0/5S48WccYNco/s1600/20150729_153806%2B%2528450x800%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dLGtQ2eA98c/VfMx5djA0fI/AAAAAAAAKf0/5S48WccYNco/s320/20150729_153806%2B%2528450x800%2529.jpg" width="283" /></a></div>
Swirls for wind currents on the sky and map contour lines on the ground.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RhZ0goUIEUI/VfMzFoafxuI/AAAAAAAAKgA/RDqX5lF_JtY/s1600/DSCN0955%2B%2528800x688%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="275" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RhZ0goUIEUI/VfMzFoafxuI/AAAAAAAAKgA/RDqX5lF_JtY/s320/DSCN0955%2B%2528800x688%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
More swirls on the sky and McTavishing on the ground.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-utJJciOUFjs/VfM0E8zwwvI/AAAAAAAAKgM/UxpX442LiSs/s1600/DSCN0956%2B%2528633x800%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-utJJciOUFjs/VfM0E8zwwvI/AAAAAAAAKgM/UxpX442LiSs/s320/DSCN0956%2B%2528633x800%2529.jpg" width="253" /></a></div>
Giant stars on the sky and giant roses on the ground.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MP9XW8Q3nUk/VfM1Kp7LqfI/AAAAAAAAKgY/Trc5NPEOGKs/s1600/DSCN0961%2B%2528708x800%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MP9XW8Q3nUk/VfM1Kp7LqfI/AAAAAAAAKgY/Trc5NPEOGKs/s320/DSCN0961%2B%2528708x800%2529.jpg" width="283" /></a></div>
Les exuberant swirls on the sky and more contours on the ground...I think I added some grass and flowers too.<br />
<br />
These were fun to do. I tried sewing the backgrounds together and quilting the tops with one mounting....ended up undoing the backgrounds and doing them separately. I can't remember exactly why but it was easier to do them apart. <br />

<ol>
<li>Make a quilt, any size.<span style="color: purple;"> Otherwise you are not a quilter...many.</span></li>
<li>Make a miniature quilt.<span style="color: purple;">Several, accuracy is so important here. Here is <a href="http://stone-belle.blogspot.com/2012/02/just-hearts.html">one</a>.</span></li>
<li>Make a King size quilt! <span style="color: purple;">I've got one <a href="http://stone-belle.blogspot.com/2010/09/retreat.html">started here</a>, and I've quilted many.</span></li>
<li>Make an easy pattern; 9-patch or rail fence. <span style="color: purple;">Done several, this is <a href="http://stone-belle.blogspot.com/2007/11/here-we-are-at-about-2-p.html">one of my favorites</a>.</span></li>
<li>Make a log cabin or 3. <span style="color: purple;">Did one as a very beginner quilter<a href="http://stone-belle.blogspot.com/2011/02/christmas-quilt.html">, here</a>, tough block.</span></li>
<li>Hand quilt ONE, at least. <span style="color: purple;">Really I did, some were miniature, one was not.</span></li>
<li>Machine quilt one so you know if you like it or not. <span style="color: purple;">Done hundred's, on my domestic and long arm.</span></li>
<li>Use a walking foot. <span style="color: purple;">Makes quilting straight lines on the domestic possible.</span></li>
<li>Do some free motion quilting.<span style="color: purple;">So fun. Domestic <a href="http://stone-belle.blogspot.com/2015/04/tulip-quilt-pattern.html">here</a>. Long arm <a href="http://stone-belle.blogspot.com/2009/08/stash-report.html">here</a>.</span></li>
<li>Bind a quilt.<span style="color: purple;"> Not my favorite past time, but I don't let them linger unbound either.</span></li>
<li>Pillowcase a quilt. <span style="color: purple;">Hate it, Did one in my 20's, that was fine. Now? NEVER!</span></li>
<li>Donate a quilt. <span style="color: purple;">Many, my favorite: <a href="http://stone-belle.blogspot.com/2012/09/charity-quilt.html">here</a>.</span></li>
<li>Work on a donation quilt. <span style="color: purple;">Many times.</span></li>
<li>Sell tickets to a donation quilt. <span style="color: purple;">Every year..really do not like to, I've bought lots too.</span>.</li>
<li>Put a bias binding on. <span style="color: purple;">My first quilt had bias binding, cause I thought that was the way it was supposed to be done...now only if the stripe needs to be diagonal.</span></li>
<li>Bind an odd shaped edge quilt. <span style="color: purple;">My daughter-in-laws hexagon, <a href="http://stone-belle.blogspot.com/2012/06/mitered-binding.html">here</a>. NEVER again.</span></li>
<li>Do prairie points. <span style="color: purple;">Never done this, really not crazy about it or I would have. :)</span></li>
<li>Hand finish a binding. <span style="color: purple;">Many, many times.</span></li>
<li>Machine finish a binding. <span style="color: purple;">Many, many times, baby quilts usually and kid's quilts.</span></li>
<li>Add piping to a binding. <span style="color: purple;">Yes, <a href="http://stone-belle.blogspot.com/2013/10/christmas-churn-dash-finished.html">once </a>for sure...maybe twice., memory fog!</span></li>
<li>Applique a block. <span style="color: purple;">Done a few, they are not in quilt yet.</span></li>
<li>Hand piece a block. <span style="color: purple;">Done a few, they are not in a quilt yet.</span></li>
<li>Redraft a block pattern to a different size.<span style="color: purple;">All the time, now I use eq7.</span></li>
<li>Do a yo-yo, or 100 yo-yo's. <span style="color: purple;">I've done a few, and taught others...but not crazy about them...until I see them in an OLD quilt, then they are amazing.</span></li>
<li>Try English Paper Piecing. <span style="color: purple;">The FIRST quilt I ever started....</span></li>
<li>Try paper piecing. <span style="color: purple;">I find it tedious but the blacks can be amazing.</span></li>
<li>Exchange a set of blocks with a group of friends. <span style="color: purple;">I find this so FUN! Lots.</span></li>
<li>MAKE that set of blocks into something. <span style="color: purple;">I've done MANY, have MANY to do.</span></li>
<li>Wash a quilt. <span style="color: purple;">Lots of times.</span></li>
<li>Take a washed quilt that bled and rescue it. <a href="http://stone-belle.blogspot.com/2013/10/christmas-churn-dash-finished.html"><span style="color: purple;">Here</span></a></li>
<li>Attend quilt Festival in Houston! <span style="color: purple;">Almost every year since 1979, pretty sure I would not have if I hadn't lived so close.</span></li>
<li>Look at the QUILTS at festival. <span style="color: purple;">I am amazed at the women that go and JUST shop.</span></li>
<li>Read quilt magazines, at the library or your home.<span style="color: blue;">I no longer read them, but as a beginner I loved them.</span></li>
<li>Check out a quilt book from the library.<span style="color: blue;">I have read all the quilt books in the 3 libraries I have lived near in the last 35 years.</span></li>
<li>Buy your own quilt book. <span style="color: orange;">Years ago my Mother told me it was okay to buy something I was passionate about occasionally once a month. Luckily I did not buy a book a month or I'd have way more than I do...30 years x 12 = a ton of books! </span> </li>
<li>If you use your book WRITE in it about your quilt.<span style="color: orange;"> I particularly enjoy rereading the books I took notes in, like I did in college. They are yours, you can write in them. Date the quilts you make, write down who you gave them to, or who helped you make them.</span> </li>
<li>Organize your books.<span style="color: orange;">I used to have them arranged by topic and all the same author together, now I have them<a href="http://stone-belle.blogspot.com/2013/01/lost-and-found.html"> arranged by color</a>. Silly but I enjoy looking at them.</span></li>
<li>Donate a quilt book to the library.<span style="color: orange;">When I was getting ready to move the last time I donated a box of quilting books to our library.</span></li>
<li>Make a label.<span style="color: orange;"> I have been making labels for years, I 've made all the labels for my Mother's quilts also, imagine my surprise when I find several quilts that are unlabeled. I don't think they are finished until they are labelled.</span></li>
<li>Make a different label. <span style="color: orange;">I have counted cross-stitched labels, computer printed labels, hand embroidery labels, painted labels and inked labels. My favorite is to have a friend with an embroidery machine make<a href="http://stone-belle.blogspot.com/2015/03/label-update.html"> the labels for me</a>.</span></li>
<li>Keep making labels until ALL your quilts are labeled. <span style="color: orange;">I'm working on this.</span></li>
<li>Make a label for the quilt your Grandma made. <span style="color: orange;">Done, see #40.</span></li>
<li>Make a rod pocket to hang a quilt. <span style="color: orange;">Done. So much easier if done when the binding is being made.</span></li>
<li>Make a pillowcase to store your quilt in. <span style="color: orange;">I've recently realized that making 2 is a good idea...if they actually use the pillowcase it will wear out way before the quilt will.</span></li>
<li>Make a pillow out of a lone block. <span style="color: orange;">Sometimes you don't want to make a whole quilt and a pillow will be just fine. I have several I get out at Christmas.</span></li>
<li>Keep a journal about your quilt making experience. <span style="color: orange;">Since I often have more than one quilt in the works it helps if I take notes, I have a notebook of just my exchange quilts.</span></li>
<li>Take pictures of your quilts.<span style="color: orange;">I keep them in a file on the computer now but my notebook has many pictures.</span></li>
<li>Hostess a speaker for your guild. <span style="color: red;">I've gotten to do this 3 times now and it is really fun. Not picking them up at the airport but the talking to them. </span></li>
<li>Join a guild. <span style="color: red;">There are 4 close enough for me to join, the one I'm most active in is the farthest away, but I was the most comfortable there. I attended 2 for a long time but now it is once a month, which was great when I had kids at home. I may get more involved now.</span></li>
<li>Be an officer in your guild. <span style="color: red;">It is hardly fair that the same 10 people do the bulk of the work in a guild. Be the new blood and take an easier job, become friends with these women that share your passion.</span></li>
<li>Go on a quilt retreat. <span style="color: red;">I've done this, but if I have an extra $300 I want to spend it visiting my grandkids. </span></li>
<li>Take a class from a speaker with your guild members.<span style="color: red;"> These classes are cheap AND the ladies are nice and share your passion so it is FUN. My goal this year was to take EVERY workshop that wasn't on Sunday and learn something new. So much fun. New friends are made when you spend time with them.</span></li>
<li>Go to a small local quilt show.<span style="color: red;"> These are so much fun, easy to see EVERY quilt.</span></li>
<li>Go to a small local quilt show while on vacation.<span style="color: red;"> The Denver Capitol Quilt show is great and the one they have in Springville, Utah is worth going to.</span></li>
<li>Figure out how to use yellow in your quilt.<span style="color: red;">The first time I did this I thought it was a FAIL but my mother honestly loves that quilt; so I gave it to her. Since then I have done it to the point that I liked it too.</span></li>
<li>Discover the color wheel. <span style="color: red;">I've read 2 books about this.</span></li>
<li>Make a quilt using the color wheel. <span style="color: red;">I'm working on an analogous quilt now.</span></li>
<li>Understand the weaving process, warp and weft.</li>
<li>Learn which direction of your fabric stretches. </li>
<li>Ease in to make your points match.</li>
<li>Do a Y seam.</li>
<li>Do it again.</li>
<li>Follow a blogger about quilting.</li>
<li>Follow a Instagram quilter. <span style="color: blue;">I did for awhile, found I'd rather just have family on instagram.</span></li>
<li>Learn the math! <span style="color: blue;">If you forget, there are lots of references available.</span></li>
<li>Design your own quilt, be creative.</li>
<li>Do it the old way with graph paper.</li>
<li>Do it the new way on the computer.</li>
<li>Combine 2 blocks in quilt. </li>
<li>Teach someone else to piece a quilt.</li>
<li>Teach someone else how to quilt a quilt.</li>
<li>Teach a child to quilt.</li>
<li>Make a play thing for a child using your quilting skills.</li>
<li>Make a bag. </li>
<li>Quilt a bag. <span style="color: blue;">I've quilted about 4 bags.</span></li>
<li>Display a quilt in your home. <span style="color: blue;">Many many quilts are displayed in my home.</span></li>
<li>Make a piece of clothing. <span style="color: blue;">I made vests and skirts....now nothing in my wardrobe is quilted.</span></li>
<li>Write directions on how to make a block. <span style="color: blue;">Did this for the guild...</span></li>
<li>Finish a quilt that has languished for YEARS on the back burner.</li>
<li>Make a quilted item for a gift.</li>
<li>Make something for your kitchen using your skills.</li>
<li>Organize your fabric.</li>
<li><span class="post-icons"><span class="item-action">Donate some fabric to an organization that will use it.</span></span></li>
<li><span class="post-icons"><span class="item-action">Use a ruler you bought.</span></span></li>
<li><span class="post-icons"><span class="item-action">Use another one or give it away.</span></span></li>
<li><span class="post-icons"><span class="item-action">Use a rotary cutter</span></span></li>
<li><span class="post-icons"><span class="item-action">Replace the blade in your rotary cutter.</span></span></li>
<li><span class="post-icons"><span class="item-action">Use scissors to cut out a block.</span></span></li>
<li><span class="post-icons"><span class="item-action">Use templates to cut out a block.</span></span></li>
<li><span class="post-icons"><span class="item-action">Test your markers.</span></span></li>
<li><span class="post-icons"><span class="item-action">Try out a new kind of marker. </span></span></li>
<li><span class="post-icons"><span class="item-action">Organize your sewing things.</span></span></li>
<li><span class="post-icons"><span class="item-action">Check ergonomic ways of improving your posture or the height of your table. </span></span></li>
<li><span class="post-icons"><span class="item-action">Learn some exercises to give your body relief after long stints of sewing.</span></span></li>
<li><span class="post-icons"><span class="item-action">Put a water bottle near your sewing and drink it.</span></span></li>
<li><span class="post-icons"><span class="item-action">Save your tiny scraps for a heavy pillow for heart patients.</span></span></li>
<li><span class="post-icons"><span class="item-action">Dye some fabric to use in your quilt.</span></span></li>
<li><span class="post-icons"><span class="item-action">Use someone else's hand dyed fabric. </span></span></li>
<li><span class="post-icons"><span class="item-action">Use solids in your quilt (or prints if you only do solids.)</span></span></li>
<li><span class="post-icons"><span class="item-action">Clean and oil your machine </span></span></li>

Can you tell I accidentally hit publish instead of save... don't even have 100 on here yet...I'm going to edit it occasionally over the next few days and change things a bit...<br />
This is really a difficult post...everytime I change the color, it flips to the wrong place....I can't stand to work on it for very long at a time. Lauriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09493918796320739364noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7762343635054811415.post-37570467110497516912015-09-08T08:08:00.000-07:002015-09-08T08:10:54.874-07:00FallIt is almost fall, if you don't have a quilt done for fall you still have time if you do nothing else. My Mother had her fall quilts out when I visited 2 weeks ago. She loved one of my quilts...this one;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-X_9S6Yvdck8/Ve74LkygKxI/AAAAAAAAKeg/kAuBUO9InCc/s1600/DSCF8159%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-X_9S6Yvdck8/Ve74LkygKxI/AAAAAAAAKeg/kAuBUO9InCc/s320/DSCF8159%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
So she improved it and created this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ry6AEDyZPXE/Ve74egyY5GI/AAAAAAAAKeo/sYBDdImTYg4/s1600/20150829_002759.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ry6AEDyZPXE/Ve74egyY5GI/AAAAAAAAKeo/sYBDdImTYg4/s320/20150829_002759.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
Appliqued pumpkins, brown instead of black and hand quilted. I love it. In person it kind of glows.<br />
One year when she was visiting I taught her how to do half square triangles and we made leaf blocks.<br />
Here are my maple leaf blocks, I was holding out for time to make more;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mDL2Yd-uEwc/Ve75CptDssI/AAAAAAAAKew/TI0khk0vkA4/s1600/blocks%2Bleaves%2BDSCF8167%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mDL2Yd-uEwc/Ve75CptDssI/AAAAAAAAKew/TI0khk0vkA4/s320/blocks%2Bleaves%2BDSCF8167%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
And here are hers;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JNE3Bi-K69k/Ve75PevjNLI/AAAAAAAAKe8/oOTpaf_cLA4/s1600/20150829_002911.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JNE3Bi-K69k/Ve75PevjNLI/AAAAAAAAKe8/oOTpaf_cLA4/s320/20150829_002911.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
a maple leaf table topper, hand quilted with squirrels and FINISHED! It looked so nice on her table that I want table toppers now.<br />

We took him to BYU-Provo last week. On our way we stopped to visit a son in Rigby, Idaho..... Now we are getting ready to move to Rigby! We are purchasing a house across the street from 3 of our grand-kids.<br />
So the purge begins..... <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mumax71JCR8/VeiJYHesvoI/AAAAAAAAKd8/Psk58acWueg/s1600/DSCN0964.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mumax71JCR8/VeiJYHesvoI/AAAAAAAAKd8/Psk58acWueg/s320/DSCN0964.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
A smaller home than we have now, but we want to retire near grandkids.<br />
It has a full basement and a large room that my longarm AND my sewing will fit into. I have been Quilter Upstairs; I will become The Quilter Downstairs. Those 2 windows at the bottom of the front of the house are to my studio. I can't wait until Spring!<br />

This snowman sampler/exchange was one of them.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7VBkbNjIeDg/VbZUmawF7AI/AAAAAAAAKbk/XEEYT8er7bo/s1600/20150715_144739%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7VBkbNjIeDg/VbZUmawF7AI/AAAAAAAAKbk/XEEYT8er7bo/s320/20150715_144739%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This is one of the first ones I quilted. Isn't that a lovely snowman? <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I love this.
Really gives me incentive to get some of MY sets of blocks together.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The back is minky, so this quilt will be quite snuggly on the couch every winter.Lauriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09493918796320739364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7762343635054811415.post-10746794257755822642015-07-26T07:00:00.000-07:002015-10-18T08:54:58.335-07:00SwimmingI LOVE HAVING A SWIMMING POOL! It was fabulous when we had all the kids at home and it is fabulous when the grand-kids visit. And it is fabulous when I can get in and exercise by myself.<br />
Just sitting near it is cooling. Not that I can stand to sit near it for long.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d47vo-9NdrY/VbQdj3voX0I/AAAAAAAAKag/THulGwJIWrM/s1600/20150707_182026%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d47vo-9NdrY/VbQdj3voX0I/AAAAAAAAKag/THulGwJIWrM/s320/20150707_182026%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
Even the 2 month old enjoyed it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Lt1UpsZAmxc/VbQdj5FPn_I/AAAAAAAAKao/or6wPVSRcWM/s1600/DSCN0888%2B%2528Small%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Lt1UpsZAmxc/VbQdj5FPn_I/AAAAAAAAKao/or6wPVSRcWM/s320/DSCN0888%2B%2528Small%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Noodles make it even more fun.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ES3KFKfNMbI/VbQeWPs8WSI/AAAAAAAAKbA/hXkwM1os3DU/s1600/DSCN0901%2B%2528Small%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ES3KFKfNMbI/VbQeWPs8WSI/AAAAAAAAKbA/hXkwM1os3DU/s320/DSCN0901%2B%2528Small%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This squirt gun was too much for him to handle but he played with it anyway.<br />

They brought this 'blob' from Colorado and it was a BIG hit after Uncle Andrew blew it up for them.Lauriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09493918796320739364noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7762343635054811415.post-64004954114228398352015-07-25T15:59:00.001-07:002015-07-25T15:59:42.366-07:00S'moresI noticed that my 7 year old grandson wanted to experiment with s'mores this year so while they were here we made s'mores twice.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hJO4ETRDv0s/VbQSYUusJOI/AAAAAAAAKZk/uWrXqN24Nk0/s1600/20150705_192702%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hJO4ETRDv0s/VbQSYUusJOI/AAAAAAAAKZk/uWrXqN24Nk0/s320/20150705_192702%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The red pillar candles came in use to roast the marshmallows over. Took awhile but it was too hot outside. The first night was pretty standard, we just had miniature marshmallows to use. The second night I'd found some 'nutter butter' cookies to use instead of the graham crackers. <br />

Here you can see the wafer cookies under the chocolate, we only had enough cookies for open face s'mores, or cookie underneath and graham on top.<br />

We made a list....not really we went to the grocery store and wandered around. This is what we decided he needed for a weeks worth of food;<br />
3 large potatoes<br />
5 cans of soup<br />
2 cans green beans <br />
1 bag of carrots<br />
8 apples<br />
pizza cheese<br />
1 small bag of pancake mix<br />
1 dozen eggs<br />
1 bowl oriental soup<br />
<br />
to be used from home;<br />
1 jar spaghetti sauce<br />
flour and sugar, yeast (for bread)<br />
and flour tortillas<br />
<br />
This is what we figured he cold fix from that;<br />
homemade bread<br />
camel eye<br />
baked potatoe<br />
hash browns<br />
pancakes<br />
pizza<br />
spaghetti<br />
scrambeled eggs<br />
french toast<br />
<br />
Not sure this kid is going to keep himself alive when he leaves home.<br />

Grandma to the rescue....I made these in about 2 hours, matching pillows also.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4oeLxd4rhEQ/VX9vk3Fsv1I/AAAAAAAAKXw/Gn6vneKMFIQ/s1600/20150615_192749%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4oeLxd4rhEQ/VX9vk3Fsv1I/AAAAAAAAKXw/Gn6vneKMFIQ/s320/20150615_192749%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
60 inches of polar fleece folded in half stitched across the bottom and up 2/3rds. I had to add red for the red boy to like it so then I added blue to the blue boys also. The handle on the pillow is attached to the pillow; then the pillow case needed a hole for the handle to come through.<br />

Child #6! Graduated. Empty nest syndrome countdown! Andrew graduated with a 3.9 GPA and is going to attend BYU Provo in the fall.<br />
<br />
<br />
Graduation speakers were short and had a good message. I got some knitting in since we had to be there 90 minutes early. After graduation he wanted to go to a Japanese restaurant so we googled it and chose one. Oishii. It happened to be happy hour and so we got to try 10 items on their happy hour list. The best? The fried banana! It was fun.<br />
<br />
Yesterday marked the first day of his real job. He is working for Source
Web Solutions in Friendswood, TX. He (and we) are so excited for this
opportunity for him to use his geekhood to monetary advantage!<br />

Everyone is doing great and I am back home.Grandchild #9 was born May 12, 2015.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SfOXgsc2GJU/VWUQYdXjG1I/AAAAAAAAKTU/sk_kEGl_wNc/s1600/20150515_164238%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SfOXgsc2GJU/VWUQYdXjG1I/AAAAAAAAKTU/sk_kEGl_wNc/s320/20150515_164238%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
This almost 2 year old fell in love with his new brother! So fun to see, so scary for Mom to have him want to hold him all. the. time.<br />
I found one activity the older boys loved, sewing;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2TCvKoYIExM/VWUQ5IjBdDI/AAAAAAAAKTc/Z63GhVCSn7k/s1600/20150517_170035%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2TCvKoYIExM/VWUQ5IjBdDI/AAAAAAAAKTc/Z63GhVCSn7k/s320/20150517_170035%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ddiB66InEfY/VWUQ5AEKC6I/AAAAAAAAKTg/I9-O1S60gJQ/s1600/20150517_174841%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ddiB66InEfY/VWUQ5AEKC6I/AAAAAAAAKTg/I9-O1S60gJQ/s320/20150517_174841%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
And what did they sew? The perfect project....We cut mom's old dish towels down to rags and folded them in thirds then the boy's got to choose a decorative stitch to hold the layers together with:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-V_sJ9uH152c/VWURrFjTDZI/AAAAAAAAKT8/mmHhPAGqMNs/s1600/IMG_20150521_162500973%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-V_sJ9uH152c/VWURrFjTDZI/AAAAAAAAKT8/mmHhPAGqMNs/s320/IMG_20150521_162500973%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QO2RdWbAmbQ/VWURrTzKafI/AAAAAAAAKUI/6xGGV8Ka_SQ/s1600/IMG_20150521_162543855%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QO2RdWbAmbQ/VWURrTzKafI/AAAAAAAAKUI/6xGGV8Ka_SQ/s320/IMG_20150521_162543855%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QO2RdWbAmbQ/VWURrTzKafI/AAAAAAAAKUA/mBPXBtNzgh8/s1600/IMG_20150521_162543855%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><br />
I know, not much to look at but the boys loved it! We used up odd bits of thread in the bobbins and maybe... the boys will enjoy using the rags they made for cleaning! We can only hope. They WANTED to use them as washcloths. <br />
I had a great time and even managed to go to a thrift store where I found a couple of purple men's shirts that I needed for my current project. (The five year old informed me that men did not wear purple shirts....)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P_5HZiDiWIA/VWUVoOMuXaI/AAAAAAAAKUQ/UXt4ePhlYXQ/s1600/20150521_075647%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P_5HZiDiWIA/VWUVoOMuXaI/AAAAAAAAKUQ/UXt4ePhlYXQ/s320/20150521_075647%2B%2528Small%2529.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
I was able to show him that they did. <br />
I've been home a week so I should actually get something finished soon.....<br />

My daughter had some sad looking potholders. ....I remodeled her 3 sad looking ones to these happy ones.<br />
I think they are pretty great and so does Liz.<br />
This is my first post using my cell phone<br />
Takes some getting used to. <br />

The blue is not the first in this but it is the latest, I have at least 4 in mind for this 'series'. <br />
It HAS been awhile....I have been sewing though so I have a top to show you.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-A6KBL5qnwtY/VUoNLTvzXWI/AAAAAAAAKQg/i1mKPK2dfjE/s1600/20150416_091500%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-A6KBL5qnwtY/VUoNLTvzXWI/AAAAAAAAKQg/i1mKPK2dfjE/s1600/20150416_091500%2B(Small).jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
Here is a charity top we (our Women's church group) got to this point. I LOVE it...we just sorted fabric into light and dark piles and sewed them together. Here is the EQ7 version;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WpRi_x5FHzI/VUoPEDtkUaI/AAAAAAAAKQs/820plF8YYp4/s1600/RS%2Bblue%2Bstripes%2B(Small).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WpRi_x5FHzI/VUoPEDtkUaI/AAAAAAAAKQs/820plF8YYp4/s1600/RS%2Bblue%2Bstripes%2B(Small).JPG" width="230" /></a></div>
I planned it with 7 x 12" blocks, but really? I cut the width to 7.5 and then just straightened the bottom and top pieces and left them ....however long they came out. Did I tell you I LOVE this top? (It would be bordered and quilted BUT I purchased a dark blue for the outer border, washed it, ironed it! and lost it.) The mix of mediums across the dark and light rows I really like.....SO...<br />
A niece was put in the hospital to wait out the birth of her high risk twins and I decided those babies needed a quilt and so started out to make this: <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tglAeTjQk4s/VUoRMUhXASI/AAAAAAAAKRA/Dl959T3DE_Y/s1600/Jenniferpink1%2B(Small)%2B(2).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tglAeTjQk4s/VUoRMUhXASI/AAAAAAAAKRA/Dl959T3DE_Y/s1600/Jenniferpink1%2B(Small)%2B(2).JPG" width="274" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I added the stars for fun....Each of the stars take 1.5 - 2 hours to make <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6a7pag1L0X0/VUoSS_76NtI/AAAAAAAAKRI/KryUq3oGtaw/s1600/20150420_143758%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6a7pag1L0X0/VUoSS_76NtI/AAAAAAAAKRI/KryUq3oGtaw/s1600/20150420_143758%2B(Small).jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
but the rest? EASY, Easy, Easy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Each block is 6 x 6 but, again, I just straightened the edges of the length. A friend donated some of her pink scraps to the mix so I had plenty of variety for the pink blocks. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So it looked like this;</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZxTz4enHCyo/VUoS-rXzZOI/AAAAAAAAKRU/TZPPAUepCAA/s1600/20150422_095404%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZxTz4enHCyo/VUoS-rXzZOI/AAAAAAAAKRU/TZPPAUepCAA/s1600/20150422_095404%2B(Small).jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-F3n4iZ_dwRY/VUoS-un3w3I/AAAAAAAAKRQ/-k78ZXiMYBw/s1600/20150427_150441%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-F3n4iZ_dwRY/VUoS-un3w3I/AAAAAAAAKRQ/-k78ZXiMYBw/s1600/20150427_150441%2B(Small).jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
Clearly I had plenty of scraps....this just scratched the surface so I changed it to this;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tWG56ijDJB0/VUoQcX484ZI/AAAAAAAAKQ8/wqmzZuh3Xdc/s1600/jenniferpink%2B(Small).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tWG56ijDJB0/VUoQcX484ZI/AAAAAAAAKQ8/wqmzZuh3Xdc/s1600/jenniferpink%2B(Small).JPG" width="278" /></a></div>
With the outer border being pieced. BUT not just piano keys I decided to work some curved seams and some tiny inserts of fabric.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Bfjapu_cdxk/VUoT6ybYBfI/AAAAAAAAKRg/YTFvWBzfmUU/s1600/20150502_095434%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Bfjapu_cdxk/VUoT6ybYBfI/AAAAAAAAKRg/YTFvWBzfmUU/s1600/20150502_095434%2B(Small).jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
These are cut 4.5 inches wide. So now it is at this stage;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qyu2HzqhWZQ/VUoUVWhL_pI/AAAAAAAAKRs/gvX1sJVrCjE/s1600/20150502_193157.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qyu2HzqhWZQ/VUoUVWhL_pI/AAAAAAAAKRs/gvX1sJVrCjE/s1600/20150502_193157.jpg" width="253" /></a></div>
And the twins were born 2 weeks ago and a doing really well for 2 lbs 7 oz and 1 lb 13 oz. babies. I plan to have this (and the twin of it) done by their due date in July.<br />

I have been working on a wool quilt for grandson #8. I just finished it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3xs32drwpTc/VS8AuwES3MI/AAAAAAAAKOM/6NMTdGi6XHs/s1600/20150415_181657%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3xs32drwpTc/VS8AuwES3MI/AAAAAAAAKOM/6NMTdGi6XHs/s1600/20150415_181657%2B(Small).jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<br /><span style="font-size: large;">This is made out of thrift store wool sweaters.</span> When I get them home I wash them in hot water and dry them. These are not felted a lot, but enough that the edges didn't fray when I cut them. For years I have seen in magazines and on-line the occasional wool sweater quilts and they all seemed to have bulky,
puckered seams. I knew that I did not want that look so
decided to butt the seams instead of the standard seam. Each place I
started and stopped the feather stitching I knotted the threads and hid
them on the back. (<a href="http://blog.betzwhite.com/2008/05/felted-seam-technique.html#.VS1e9vAYfQQ">Bette White </a>shows a cool technique that I might try next time :))<br />
Once I chose the 3 sweaters I thought I could get to work together I over-dyed the yellow sweater with a stronger, brighter yellow. (It started out a very pale yellow.) I decided on the size based on the pockets in the lighter blue sweater and cut as many 6 inch squares as I could then I cut 3" squares then 1.5 inch squares. After laying them out I figured out what and how many yellows I needed. I also used the scraps to practice my seams and made a couple of postcards with them:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hrjpnwiVCGo/VS1bB5hPF-I/AAAAAAAAKNo/74VEjoHQsrE/s1600/20150120_153207%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hrjpnwiVCGo/VS1bB5hPF-I/AAAAAAAAKNo/74VEjoHQsrE/s1600/20150120_153207%2B(Small).jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0GZeMzK4Pvo/VS1bLJanyzI/AAAAAAAAKNw/knHUZ3WZrcM/s1600/20150123_002327%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0GZeMzK4Pvo/VS1bLJanyzI/AAAAAAAAKNw/knHUZ3WZrcM/s1600/20150123_002327%2B(Small).jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
(I used all of the blue sweaters but have the back left of the yellow.)<br />
<br />
The sweater squares kept creeping forward when stitching. First I tried a spray adhesive, it still moved. So I tried basting each piece down:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Wwbwx5eMTbU/VShuNyE3YGI/AAAAAAAAKME/sT7is7uwDtY/s1600/20150125_184214%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Wwbwx5eMTbU/VShuNyE3YGI/AAAAAAAAKME/sT7is7uwDtY/s1600/20150125_184214%2B(Small).jpg" height="320" width="285" /></a></div>
It still moved and those stitches were a pain to remove. So I used strips of steam a seam 2 under each seam, ironing it to a very thin interfacing, then stitched. It worked much better. After getting each block made I laid them out on the guest room bed.and rearranged it, and rearranged it, and played with it some more.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pKMsOb0FwoI/VShuvbKA3vI/AAAAAAAAKMM/CEOc5JpQAkE/s1600/20150131_231517%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pKMsOb0FwoI/VShuvbKA3vI/AAAAAAAAKMM/CEOc5JpQAkE/s1600/20150131_231517%2B(Small).jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3YuX227hoD4/VShuy5FjpnI/AAAAAAAAKMU/MSjDcYUK2OI/s1600/20150131_230657%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3YuX227hoD4/VShuy5FjpnI/AAAAAAAAKMU/MSjDcYUK2OI/s1600/20150131_230657%2B(Small).jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
Then I went to EQ7 ( I love EQ7.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-23KgNDaUFYk/VS8CoRwKegI/AAAAAAAAKOY/dU8IvJf6oj0/s1600/grandson%238%2B3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-23KgNDaUFYk/VS8CoRwKegI/AAAAAAAAKOY/dU8IvJf6oj0/s1600/grandson%238%2B3.JPG" height="320" width="228" /></a></div>
<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Then I sewed it together. THEN I tried to figure out how to bind it and quilt it. I thought maybe satin blanket binding.....NO that looked horrible. I even considered knitting my own binding....I went to Painted Pony 'n Quilts (a great quilt shop) and Tonya helped me select the only fabric even close to the right colors, a plaid.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GrpP3qeRWjo/VS8C6sMaNQI/AAAAAAAAKOg/vBF8cKvyB38/s1600/20150415_181734%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GrpP3qeRWjo/VS8C6sMaNQI/AAAAAAAAKOg/vBF8cKvyB38/s1600/20150415_181734%2B(Small).jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
I decided to back it with thin-wale corduroy (since nothing else looked good- although now I think the plaid would have been fine). I tried to find a flannel but didn't. (now I've found a quilt shop that carries more flannel; Quilters Emporium in Stafford, TX)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SNI6V6Qq824/VS8DD2YZoTI/AAAAAAAAKOo/01V8a4JeQEw/s1600/20150415_181725%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SNI6V6Qq824/VS8DD2YZoTI/AAAAAAAAKOo/01V8a4JeQEw/s1600/20150415_181725%2B(Small).jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
I added a border of yellow and cut the interfacing out from behind the blocks. So the back of the top looks like this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GxVyyd5qCps/VSk5uUflK1I/AAAAAAAAKM4/kmJvoeaxuHQ/s1600/20150402_124644%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GxVyyd5qCps/VSk5uUflK1I/AAAAAAAAKM4/kmJvoeaxuHQ/s1600/20150402_124644%2B(Small).jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
In trying to figure out how to quilt this the pockets kept getting in the way so I got my magnifying light out and managed to pick them off. I gave the pockets to a friend to monogram the baby's last initial (no first name has been decided on) and the year of birth; '15. (Then after all the quilting I sewed them back on-the hardest part of the whole quilt!)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hr_4oU2JPIQ/VS8ENOTBgoI/AAAAAAAAKO8/r-pJ28uv39o/s1600/20150415_181713%2B(Small)%2B(3).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hr_4oU2JPIQ/VS8ENOTBgoI/AAAAAAAAKO8/r-pJ28uv39o/s1600/20150415_181713%2B(Small)%2B(3).jpg" height="200" width="190" /></a></div>
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gBJXH6DVDJE/VS8EKilnl7I/AAAAAAAAKO0/WYOkkkjHVS8/s1600/20150415_181705%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gBJXH6DVDJE/VS8EKilnl7I/AAAAAAAAKO0/WYOkkkjHVS8/s1600/20150415_181705%2B(Small).jpg" height="187" width="200" /></a><br />
<br />
I would have liked to quilt a design that would allow the quilt to
drape better but since I'm unsure of the strength of those butted seams I
went with a tight baptist fan. The pin-wale corduroy on the back feels
wonderful but the quilt is a little stiff. Next time maybe I'll leave
the batting out.<br />
<br />
This will be used for years. Unlike the baby quilts
I've made in the past this will have a place on their couch every
winter, at least as long as they live in a cold climate.<br />
I LOVED trying
something new and using some of my bin of wool....now to make one out of
cashmere.....<br />
When I asked for one more picture my son did this: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0C0tE81Dsl0/VS8FFgV2-KI/AAAAAAAAKPE/brOAV7vculQ/s1600/20150415_181832%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0C0tE81Dsl0/VS8FFgV2-KI/AAAAAAAAKPE/brOAV7vculQ/s1600/20150415_181832%2B(Small).jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
You CAN still see the quilt.....Lauriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09493918796320739364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7762343635054811415.post-81279485479800623812015-04-14T11:16:00.000-07:002015-06-30T06:07:41.031-07:00zipper bagYeah! I used 4 zippers last week. I got to demonstrate how to make a bag at our woman's meeting. I had to refresh my memory before the meeting AND make one during the meeting. I considered giving it to one of the attendees.... but I am just to selfish....and I couldn't give up either fabric to someone else cause I used some of my bestest fabric EVER!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kNag-p7Zhgc/VS1Tka877PI/AAAAAAAAKNQ/bglGIaOH0pY/s1600/20150414_124243%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kNag-p7Zhgc/VS1Tka877PI/AAAAAAAAKNQ/bglGIaOH0pY/s1600/20150414_124243%2B(Small).jpg" title="2 zip bags" width="180" /></a></div>
The yellow daisy I bought years ago for a doll dress..after my girls were too old for it, so it's waiting....hopefully there will be enough left for a doll dress. (The doll will have to be small.)<br />
The green is a scrap from I dress I made in High school for myself. A BEAUTIFUL dress that I have no picture of :(. (Anyway it proves that I was young once and could wear that bright green....maybe it wasn't a good color on me but the dress was cute!)<br />
<br />
The next 2 zippers I used in a bag that I'm loving. I first saw it on this <a href="http://imquilternity.blogspot.com/search?q=zip+%26+go">blog</a>. So this is what I'm using now while I wait for the hardware to come in so I can take it apart and add it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m_BZbaGtyR0/VS1XPcwRjfI/AAAAAAAAKNc/Lbak4tfnuHw/s1600/20150414_124256%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m_BZbaGtyR0/VS1XPcwRjfI/AAAAAAAAKNc/Lbak4tfnuHw/s1600/20150414_124256%2B(Small).jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
In my stash of zippers I only had 2 repeats, these 2 hot pink ones and 3 beige ones. So I looked at my wall of fabric and choose something to go with the 2 pink zippers. I made it about midnight Saturday night and used it for church Sunday. It is so nice to use a small purse after using BIG ones for years. I did not have any pink thread so I used dots of fusible for the strap. I really like the look without stitching but not sure how it will wash. Here is a link to a <a href="http://www.dogundermydesk.com/store/patterns/zip-and-go-pdf-pattern/">pattern</a> (which I did not use, really it would be easier to follow a pattern than to make it up as you go). I think I'll make another one...or.... 5.<br />
<br />
Oh, if you want to know how to make the bags on top...<a href="http://www.sewdelicious.com.au/2012/04/trouble-with-zips.html?showComment=1335540372156">here is a tutorial done by someone else</a>...at least one of those bags were made like that....I experimented with the zip on the other... <br />

It was an exchange I did over 20 years ago. I finished the quilt as a baby quilt for our 5th child, born in 1995. (This is one of 5 quilts I made him- I had a broken foot and had to stay off of it.) Turns out he was a boy and this quilt did not get used much. I get it out every spring and drape it somewhere. This year it got the place of honor since it is small and the dog can't reach it. (That is not true he could reach it if he wanted to I just hope he doesn't want to.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-34H3hFEHwHw/VRv-yxxx_kI/AAAAAAAAKKE/VBZoVm3ik7A/s1600/20150401_085217.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-34H3hFEHwHw/VRv-yxxx_kI/AAAAAAAAKKE/VBZoVm3ik7A/s1600/20150401_085217.jpg" height="320" width="220" /></a> </div>
Here is my EQ7 version:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YlsAyQKRmxU/VRvqL-LcauI/AAAAAAAAKJY/GMZyBs6JJvE/s1600/tulips%2B(Small).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YlsAyQKRmxU/VRvqL-LcauI/AAAAAAAAKJY/GMZyBs6JJvE/s1600/tulips%2B(Small).JPG" height="320" width="256" /></a></div>
I love this quilt. This is the block as we sewed it. The background is different white on white fabrics. We were told to use pastel prints on the tulip, a solid in the center and a soft green print on the leaves. It is a 6" block:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1B576zIU6Ak/VRvqUEf-FDI/AAAAAAAAKJk/nAsuSiirUJI/s1600/tulip1%2B(Small).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1B576zIU6Ak/VRvqUEf-FDI/AAAAAAAAKJk/nAsuSiirUJI/s1600/tulip1%2B(Small).JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
This is how I would do it now:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VsKXL6z_pHo/VRvqUG1lryI/AAAAAAAAKJg/auixpERU4io/s1600/tulip2%2B(Small).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VsKXL6z_pHo/VRvqUG1lryI/AAAAAAAAKJg/auixpERU4io/s1600/tulip2%2B(Small).JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Here is how I grouped them. I made them into 12 inch blocks, needed 12 12"blocks....that's 48 6" blocks. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8hsnxynyKkA/VRwBWjbyANI/AAAAAAAAKKQ/I3dj8bAvNDI/s1600/20150401_085237%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8hsnxynyKkA/VRwBWjbyANI/AAAAAAAAKKQ/I3dj8bAvNDI/s1600/20150401_085237%2B(Small).jpg" height="293" width="320" /></a></div>
I quilted it on my domestic machine with a stipple all over, except in
the border and in the tulips. I remember getting so bored with the
quilting that I started hiding letters and a few pictures in the
stippling. I did the whole alphabet and #5. The pictures were very simple like a sail boat, a canoe and a flower. When the light is just right you can find them.My 9 year old loved looking for them and telling everyone else to look for them. <br />
EQ7 is so much fun to play with. I moved the blocks around here:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Jm-EFWbe2_w/VRwHOKxxqPI/AAAAAAAAKKk/8hVeLowdt_w/s1600/tulip3%2B(Small).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Jm-EFWbe2_w/VRwHOKxxqPI/AAAAAAAAKKk/8hVeLowdt_w/s1600/tulip3%2B(Small).JPG" height="320" width="256" /></a></div>
and here:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MANjzmgdbkA/VRwHOG4X6eI/AAAAAAAAKKg/gWpTXg75htg/s1600/tulip4%2B(Small).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MANjzmgdbkA/VRwHOG4X6eI/AAAAAAAAKKg/gWpTXg75htg/s1600/tulip4%2B(Small).JPG" height="320" width="256" /></a></div>
They are all pretty. Wouldn't Kaffe fabrics look great in those tulips?<br />

I've had fun playing with EQ today...and yesterday when I wasn't sleeping. A fever really knocks you out but I'm recovering...at least enough to play EQ.Lauriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09493918796320739364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7762343635054811415.post-69013189544971648552015-03-15T09:22:00.000-07:002015-03-17T09:21:41.153-07:00Labels for my QuiltsI feel strongly that quilts need to be labeled. I took on the project of labeling the quilts my mother made, and the one's in her possession and have been making labels for 25 years. In the past I've written about my favorite hand stitch for making labels, <a href="http://stone-belle.blogspot.com/2010/05/wrapped-backstitch.html">here</a> and<a href="http://stone-belle.blogspot.com/2010/04/work.html"> here</a>. I have done a couple of counted cross-stitch labels on 50th wedding anniversary quilts....but that is very time consuming. My new favorite way is to have a friends embroider them on her machine....like this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kbQUYhvoINw/VQOEGZsLcJI/AAAAAAAAKF0/QdbpdPYWuXg/s1600/20150313_184920%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kbQUYhvoINw/VQOEGZsLcJI/AAAAAAAAKF0/QdbpdPYWuXg/s1600/20150313_184920%2B(Small).jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
This is the label I sewed on today...I wasn't sure when I almost finished this quilt but I did have a record that put the exchange in 1992; that's close enough for me. I generally make labels and get them on the quilt, somehow this one was skipped. (Because although I've been using it and have it bound I don't have the quilting actually finished...before it can be washed the border has to be quilted.)<br />
Here is a label I made in 1989 using permanent pen;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rPeowzu2m-c/VQOE6i9dxHI/AAAAAAAAKF8/BFUVHaWLYS4/s1600/batik%2B003%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rPeowzu2m-c/VQOE6i9dxHI/AAAAAAAAKF8/BFUVHaWLYS4/s1600/batik%2B003%2B(Small).jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
I wrote it directly on the back of the quilt and you can see that the ink is fading. In 21 years the label faded a lot. This is a quilt that was seldom
washed, since it was on the back of the couch during December only. When I took the quilt to add quilting to it I made this;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TDA9ZjGlz2I/VQOFSnuiHdI/AAAAAAAAKGE/82zHvVOtLfk/s1600/batik%2B006%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TDA9ZjGlz2I/VQOFSnuiHdI/AAAAAAAAKGE/82zHvVOtLfk/s1600/batik%2B006%2B(Small).jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
I added additional quilting on my long arm and made a new label. So don't use ink for the label!<br />
Here's another ink label, I remember making this one with freezer paper behind the yellow fabric and ironing it well to make it permanent; it has been washed once;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uPFlmU7Xs9A/VQOPHWXoP3I/AAAAAAAAKHI/cQI6BwO_c7I/s1600/courthouse%2Bfires%2Bquilt%2B014%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uPFlmU7Xs9A/VQOPHWXoP3I/AAAAAAAAKHI/cQI6BwO_c7I/s1600/courthouse%2Bfires%2Bquilt%2B014%2B(Small).jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
Redoing labels is never fun.<br />
Here I had looked at the back of a speaker's quilt and she had labeled hers with the pigma marker on the hanging sleeve. So if you are in a hurry and don't have a label yet this will let you know when you finished it. But eventually it will need to be replaced with an embroidered one.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t25pnEFWHUs/VQWtbgo-7ZI/AAAAAAAAKH0/OU3sz122-4w/s1600/20150314_195710%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t25pnEFWHUs/VQWtbgo-7ZI/AAAAAAAAKH0/OU3sz122-4w/s1600/20150314_195710%2B(Small).jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
Here is a quilt where the label is part of the front, it has never been washed and the ink is fine...I will embroider on top of the ink before washing this quilt or maybe I can get away with photographing it and re-inking it after washing;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-a763pak4J2I/VQOH48p83PI/AAAAAAAAKGQ/syT4_mZtqTk/s1600/batik%2B010%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-a763pak4J2I/VQOH48p83PI/AAAAAAAAKGQ/syT4_mZtqTk/s1600/batik%2B010%2B(Small).jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
Here is another way I made a couple labels years ago;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AH8gw0ZJxEU/VQOIYxmU4qI/AAAAAAAAKGY/ghDQdkELyws/s1600/DSCF5857%2B(Small).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AH8gw0ZJxEU/VQOIYxmU4qI/AAAAAAAAKGY/ghDQdkELyws/s1600/DSCF5857%2B(Small).JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
I used a photo of the maker of the quilt; Lizzie Caughey, my Great-Great Grandmother. It has held up well but the label has never been washed.<br />
Then I went through a stage where I made labels using my sewing machine;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Kb2bykRL7Vk/VQOJFki6ilI/AAAAAAAAKGg/6_D29jRrJzw/s1600/DSCF5871%2B(Small).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Kb2bykRL7Vk/VQOJFki6ilI/AAAAAAAAKGg/6_D29jRrJzw/s1600/DSCF5871%2B(Small).JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
It's very hard to read here, but still in good shape. Here's another;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Vr1VLzOrWUU/VQOJTiniE3I/AAAAAAAAKGo/cM-ThPMfESI/s1600/Jeffrey%27s%2Bquilt%2Band%2Bmonth%2Bquilt%2B010%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Vr1VLzOrWUU/VQOJTiniE3I/AAAAAAAAKGo/cM-ThPMfESI/s1600/Jeffrey's%2Bquilt%2Band%2Bmonth%2Bquilt%2B010%2B(Small).jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
This one has been washed a lot.The label has held up well.<br />
Now I usually frame the label like the one on top of this post or like this one;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-26gf0xVA6O8/VQOJqHss_yI/AAAAAAAAKGw/R0f1k1yP4Qs/s1600/liz%27s%2Bquilt%2Bwedding%2B008%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-26gf0xVA6O8/VQOJqHss_yI/AAAAAAAAKGw/R0f1k1yP4Qs/s1600/liz's%2Bquilt%2Bwedding%2B008%2B(Small).jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
Often the frame is left over pieces of the quilt;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iCgOfrVeBR0/VQWt6aL1eXI/AAAAAAAAKH8/BiuY9q-u3K0/s1600/20150314_195533%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iCgOfrVeBR0/VQWt6aL1eXI/AAAAAAAAKH8/BiuY9q-u3K0/s1600/20150314_195533%2B(Small).jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
This one was embroidered by machine and attached before I quilted it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EA0eEyno6mk/VQWuDfszj_I/AAAAAAAAKIE/ZuVil5oNvyg/s1600/20150314_195414%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EA0eEyno6mk/VQWuDfszj_I/AAAAAAAAKIE/ZuVil5oNvyg/s1600/20150314_195414%2B(Small).jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
(the bottom one has an added little label I had made to indicate that it has wool batting in it.)<br />
<br />
Once I incorporated the label as part of the back of the quilt before it was quilted like this;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2ndDQ_Otg5E/VQOMw2g_ZNI/AAAAAAAAKG8/keA7WCG4mlU/s1600/customer%2Bquilts%2Band%2Bmine%2B007.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2ndDQ_Otg5E/VQOMw2g_ZNI/AAAAAAAAKG8/keA7WCG4mlU/s1600/customer%2Bquilts%2Band%2Bmine%2B007.jpg" height="320" width="105" /></a></div>
This has space for the grandkids to sign when they get to sleep under the quilt.<br />
Finally another way I labeled a quilt that was not very successful. I painted it. White acrylic paint on a blue background..<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FRxHZVeUMwI/VQWvP4PlVVI/AAAAAAAAKIM/b4u9qPQDc0o/s1600/20150314_195804%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FRxHZVeUMwI/VQWvP4PlVVI/AAAAAAAAKIM/b4u9qPQDc0o/s1600/20150314_195804%2B(Small).jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
It's barely readable and clearly needs to be remade. This quilt actually has 2 labels with different information on each:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mqGB_IQKf1Q/VQWvrwlJlHI/AAAAAAAAKIU/e8gtTj_ybCU/s1600/20150314_195834%2B(Small).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mqGB_IQKf1Q/VQWvrwlJlHI/AAAAAAAAKIU/e8gtTj_ybCU/s1600/20150314_195834%2B(Small).jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
Here you can see it better. I finished this in 1994. In 20 years the label has faded a lot. This quilt has been just lightly used and has not been washed very much, maybe 4 times?<br />
<br />
Clearly labels need to be made with care and with a method that will hold up over time. Ink and paint is out. Embroidery is much better. Take the time to make a label that will last.<br />
